What is Operating System (OS) with Full Details
An operating system is a software that controls how hardware works. Hardware includes computers, mobile phones, tablets, and many other devices. An operating system is what makes these devices work together. Without an operating system, nothing would happen.
An operating system (often abbreviated as OS) is a computer program or set of programs that run on a computer hardware platform. There are two types of operating systems:
a. Personal Computer OS
A personal computer operating system is software that runs on a computer's processor. Examples of personal computer operating systems include Windows 10, Mac OS X, Android, iOS, and Linux.
b. Embedded Systems
An embedded system is a special type of computer that performs specific tasks without being connected to any other device. These systems are often used in cars, appliances, and other electronic devices.

Example of Operating System
Windows 10 is an operating system developed by Microsoft Corporation. It was first released in 2015 and is currently the most popular version of Windows. Windows is a series of graphical operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. It originated as a project codenamed NewOS, later renamed Windows NT after its first major release in 1993.
Mac OS X is an operating system developed and marketed by Apple Inc. It was first released on January 24, 2001. macOS X is a discontinued proprietary personal computer and server operating system developed by Apple Inc., released in 2001. As of 2017, macOS is still the dominant desktop environment for users accessing the Internet on their computers.
Android is an open-source operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers.
iOS is an operating system developed, marketed, and sold by Apple Inc. It is installed on iPhones, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch.
Linux is an open-source Unix-like operating system created and maintained by Linus Torvalds. Linux stands for Linux and is not only a Unix-like operating system based upon the kernel Linux but is also the name of the GNU/Linux distributions Linus Torvalds developed while working, for now, defunct software company Transmeta Corporation of Santa Clara California.
Operating systems are used to manage computer hardware
This includes disks, mouse, keyboards, as well as many other devices that are part of the computer infrastructure.
All operating systems share common features – they both provide resources for running programs, providing access to files and protocols, managing users and permissions, and generally “doing things” with computers.
What sets one operating system apart from another is what it does and how it does it. For example, Linux operates using a different kernel than Windows (which uses Microsoft's NT kernel). There are several differences between the two, including how we interact with them, what services they include, and who controls each.
This may sound complicated, but let's talk about why it matters. The existence of multiple operating systems has created a need for coordination across numerous platforms, which in turn creates opportunities both good and bad.
Microsoft Windows is an operating system
Even if you are not computer savvy, you still can use computers. They are very common now. You would probably have heard about it or might be using it yourself.
Anyone who works outdoors (such as construction workers, farmhands, nurses, doctors, etc.) frequently uses a computer. It’s important to remember that even if you aren’t familiar with computers, there are times when they are necessary.
Computers are often used in healthcare to track health records and prescribe medications. Since most hospitals run on computers, doing something online usually means you are going offline.
If you are trying to manage your hospital finances, everything you do is to get money into or out of your account. This way, you know what’s happening with your business at all times.
Other operating systems include Mac OS, Linux, BSD, Chrome OS, and Android
Like other computer platforms, most people start out with Windows. You can actually use Windows without any additional software or services (for example, you don’t need it to run your games), but it is easier to manage files and applications when everything is managed by one company.
Windows comes in both free and paid versions; we will be using the free version here. If you are looking for a way to enhance the performance of your system, then there are ways to do that too. For example, if you have old devices lying around, you could install the latest CPU in your system for improved performance.
That cost money, though. Another way to improve performance is to buy hardware specifically designed for running computers with many processes. We won’t be doing that here, however.
For now, we only want to focus on which edition of Windows you choose to download. Find out what type of machine you plan to use it on!
What is the relationship between the operating system and computer hardware?
Computer hardware is machinery necessary for computing tasks to be carried out. Usually, various hardware components function together to perform this task.
Each component plays a key role in information processing and each has its own benefit or downside depending on the type of work it does.
Main memory is used for storing run-time parameters, applications, software codes, and other essential data types. Secondary storage like hard disk drives or SSDs is where systems store their actual data as well as many common application-level files such as documents, pictures, movies, and so on.
Tertiary storage is where systems keep versions of web pages that users have access to online. Primary storage is where computers store new programs while they are still in use. All of these things share the same physical space, which can be limited by cost.
Today’s desktop PCs have four primary storage devices: one with built-in drive heads and internal disks, and three bays for add-on magnetic electronic storage (hard disc drives). Smaller laptops may limit themselves to two storage devices — one disk inside the main unit and a port for upgrading the outer file structure.
More powerful laptop models may include additional connectivity options including fiber channel, SAS, Qlogic SCSI, Thunderbolt, FireWire, and USB ports enabling functionality similar to fixed model computers. These extras reduce costs but require external power and infrastructure.
Operating systems use a kernel to manage hardware devices
A computer operating system serves several functions. It controls what software runs, allocates resources, and it manages data paths.
Controlling how the software works, allows for better organization and security. Different types of operating systems exist, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.
Some of the more popular include Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.
More information could be added to this list, but the main points have been made. Now let’s look at how each one operates.
All computers need operating systems
Without an operating system, you can’t do anything. Your computer has to have some sort of operation running for you to interact with it.
That operation runs many different programs — including your web browser and word processor. Most people think that their operating system is the part that lets them use software, but it really is the entire machine “living” together.
A better way to understand this is to compare laptops and PCs at a first-seeming glance. They both run the software, and they are both able to perform tasks equally; however, if we look more closely, we can see several differences between how each device operates.
Software is designed for one or the other, rather than being written flat out impossible to adapt to only one kind of device. This sometimes leads to confusion as to why something works the same way on one device but not another.
Why is there no USB port on the desktop when it would be useful on the laptop version? Because all new USB technology uses much smaller devices for transferring data over USB, which limits the size of the desktop user interface because of space constraints.
Limiting users to small keyboards and mice introduces consistency into the experience, as these were the input devices available at every stage of the development of the platform.
What is the best operating system?
That depends on what you want out of an operating system. If you just need your computer to run the software, then definitely go for Microsoft Windows, because it has more than half of all computers running it.
If you want your computer to be secure, have good speed, and are not picky, then consider Ubuntu Linux; it is very safe and efficient.
Alternatively, if you like Google and its products, try GNU/Linux systems such as Debian or Mint. They are great choices with open source software that can’t be changed bad!
If you don’t mind having only one browser (Chrome) and no apps (because you’ll use Safari instead of Firefox), then any number of the above will probably work fine for you. But if you do, there are some differences between them.
For example, Chrome is better at managing passwords and keeps its files in RAM rather than on disk so they load faster. Also, by default, searches through your phone (your data) include everything from your name to how much money you have.
Having two years' worth of Internet history tracked, along with many other things, tries to get you to sign up for bells services which cost money. You can disable these things in settings.
Other browsers also have features similar to chrome including masks that view your identity. Find out about those to see why people choose them."
It’s all about balance
Now let’s talk about what it takes to develop a strong operating system.
You need to understand that there is no such thing as “the” operating system. Microsoft has tried to make one by forcing their desktop software onto the world, but they only have 10% of the market.
And even then, how many people actually use Windows? Nobody uses Windows compared to the millions who use Linux. Understand that this article isn’t talking about Linux vs Windows, this article is talking about the quality of the two systems.
Linux is a free system like Android. And while we love Android, its ecosystem is too focused on making money. This means you always lose something in the transition from consumer software to business software.
Android needs some serious work when it comes to usability. I just can’t see why anybody would want to use it over iOS. But these are both examples of systems that don’t suffer from the disease.
The disease is where the mobile industry goes wrong. And keeping things small is part of the problem. Trying to combine the functionality of a computer with the simplicity of a phone hasn’t worked out so well.
But introducing new diseases into the mix makes everything worse. Look at web browsers for example. Both Chrome and Firefox are solid pieces of software. However, because Google controls the browser engine and Apple doesn’t, there are security holes in
Consider the benefits of using the operating system
Modern computers use computer operating systems to control features such as security, efficiency, speed, and connectivity.
Each operating system is designed for specific software programs, so if you don’t need special functions, then you won’t have to purchase a separate operating system.
Each OS comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages- so which one would you rather run on your machine? If you are purchasing a new computer, there are usually options that give you free lifetime support along with all the legal rights to the operating system.
If you already have a computer that runs a certain operating system, consider buying a license key to make it compatible with the next-generation technology or upgrade.
Many companies offer pirated versions of operating systems with anti-piracy features removed, making them cheaper than original products. You may want to look into these lower-cost alternatives because you can always promote digital media and how easy it is to download music and movies today.
